Kingston Coffee House “St. Patrick’s Day” Replay

Dai Bando

By Mike Stevenson

“Green beer” music refers to the stereotypical, high-energy, and often Americanized pub songs played during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. It is closely associated with party atmospheres, the consumption of green-dyed beer, and sometimes, the reduction of Irish culture to cliches
There’ll be none of that on my show tonight.

NOTES

*Dominic Behan published the modern version of “Cerrifurgus” in 1965, often referring to it initially as “The Kerry Boatman”. The melody is derived from an 18th-century Munster Irish song, “Do Bhí Bean Uasal” (“There Was a Noblewoman”), attributed to poet Cathal Buí Mac Giolla Ghunna.
